January 2022

Uncategorized

It was my last full month on the island and most of it was quiet with my typical routine continuing to the end. I was happy to be able to hang with friends like Robin (we got a kick out of having the same name) one last time. He was a sweet teacher who also DJed. The biggest event of the month was probably the amazing experience of hiking with the founder of the Olle trail and a famous Korean actor along her lovely famous director husband. I spent most of the hike chatting with him.

Before I moved to Jeju I thought that I would be flying back to Seoul on a normal basis for a social and dating life. It turned out that my life had been full enough focusing on my students and the rescue. Most of the expat community hadn’t made the best impression and they only seemed to see me for the animal rescue anyway. It was OK, though. For some of the same reasons I liked traveling alone, I liked that it gave me the chance to watch the local people and culture. Not having many friends, however, meant not having help with my move. And moving off an island meant that I should have listed my belongings far in advance in the hopes that, say, a new teacher coming to the island would buy all of it. Instead I only listed it a month before the move and ended up having to leave hundreds of dollars worth next to the dumpster where professional collectors would pick it all up. Guess it was their money to make. I still had a couple weeks before finishing that up, though.

Jeju, I loved you. You brought me a happiness and peace I had never known and may never know again.
